Why Fashion Photography?

How I became a fashion photographer is not nearly as interesting a question as why I continue to work as a fashion photographer. The former has to do with origins, and that's a rather uneventful story; the latter has to do with the meaning and significance behind my work, and that is something I had been pondering for quite some time.

What is it about fashion photography that draws me in more than other forms of photography? Part of the allure, I think, is that fashion photography lends itself to storytelling better than other forms of portrait photography, and an image that tells a story has great lasting power. There is drama there, exuberance, dance, elegance and beauty, and these elements come together to paint a visual narrative. Every piece of the puzzle -- the wardrobe, the hair, the makeup, the model, the photographer and creative team -- must come together to produce something greater than themselves, a whole greater than its parts. This, for me, is the allure of fashion photography.

Halle

I met up with Halle (NV Models) as part of a series of assignments in Chicago. It was a pleasure to work with someone with such range, style and personality. Special thanks to my friend Jess Stacy for assisting, and for a great conversation.
